The July issue of TRAINS
has an article titled "
2100 COMES EAST ".
This is another steam
restoration story. Reading
Co. 4-8-4 #2100 is being
returned from the west
coast, on a 16 wheel
flatcar, to Cleveland where
it will be restored to
operation along with former
Grand Trunk 2-8-2 # 4070 and
a St. Louis-San Francisco
2-8-2 # 1352.
The 2100, first of thirty
T1s was built in the Reading
RR shops in 1945 using
components from older
locomotives. Four of the
original 30 survive today.
The writer photographed a
T-1 heading a fast freight
at the Valley Forge station
in the early 1950's. Our son
and I also rode behind the
2100 doubleheaded with 4070
on a fan trip from
Wilkinsburg to Altoona and
back in the late 1970's. On
the return trip the 4070
broke an eccentric rod while
climbing the Horseshoe
Curve. causing our arrival
back home to be 7 hours
late.
